In-8 (170 x 108 mm) of 503 pp.; brown calf, flat pages decorated with a wide decoration of interlacing wax-painted (white, red, green, black) and gilded interlacing, spine gilt, edges gilded (contemporary binding). Beautiful and rare edition printed by Robert Estienne, of this important commentary by the Andrienne de Terence. USTC cites only 4 institutional copies, none of which are in the United States. Copy in red. "Extremely rare edition of this comedy of Terence, intended for schoolboys by Charles Estienne; it was first issued in 1541 and was frequently reprinted" (Schreiber). Small stains in the title, pages 309 /310 with old tears without missing; binding formerly restored and repainted, several spine boards redone, modern endpapers.
