(title, dedication to Pembroke & Montgomery, introduction and epitaph, table), 272 pp., 1 f.n.ch. (table of actors), 328 pp., 303 pp. Collation: ?2, ?A4 A-Y6 Z4 [2]B-2Z6 *3A-*3D6 *3E8 3A-4B6 4C2; brown calf, spine ribbed, red morocco title piece, jaspered edges (contemporary binding). Fourth edition or ? Fourth folio? of the works of William Shakespeare. Copy with the title in the first edition, before the addition of Chiswell's name, and with folios 2B3-4 in the first edition with the printed frame. It is based on the third edition of 1663, most copies of which were destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666. This fourth edition follows the text established by John Heminge (died 1630) and Henry Condell (died 1627) and contains Pericles and the six apocryphal pieces, of which only Pericles is today considered a true Shakespearean work. In this fourth edition Shakespeare's name was truncated from the last 'e', a writing that was found until the beginning of the 19th century. The fourth, and last edition of the 17th century, is distinguished by its larger format. The publisher had indeed decided to space the texts on a higher page. Thus the volume became more elegant, larger in size but less thick. The beautiful frontispiece portrait is by Martin Droeshout and contains a 10-line verse for the reader. 2H1v sheet with low inking and 7 words partially retraced at the time, some small spots or tiny rust holes, E6v sheet folded when printed and printed as is, touching the corner without any text missing; scratches and lacks, spine and title piece redone in the past.
