MARMONT (Auguste-Frédéric). 1774-1852. Marshal of the Empire - Lot 163
MARMONT (Auguste-Frédéric). 1774-1852. Marshal of the Empire, Duke of Raguse.
L.A.S. (to his bankers). Chatillon, September 15. 2 pp. ¼ two-sheet in-12 square.
Relating to a money matter; following the surprise provoked by the letter he has just received, he sends to Paris "a person invested with all my confidence (...) A momentary need for money has put me in the position of negotiating some paper I had endorsed and you have been obliging enough to discount it. I thanked you for this in good time (...)". The marshal details the affair; he does not remember on what basis he borrowed, but thought it was 6 or 7%.
ATTACHED is a letter from the marshal's wife, Hortense, to her father, the banker Perregaux, written a few days after her marriage when she had just arrived at the family of her husband, the future marshal duc de Raguse, in Chatilon; "(...) I have inherited a certain degree of cowardice; and my soldier has not yet succeeded in inspiring me with his bravery; he has succeeded better, for example, in making me find the short road, by the care he has taken to amuse me (...). His love and care were a great help to me after I left you (...). When we arrived here, we were very well received (...). But the most comical thing was the haste with which we made our way from Troyes (...). We were greeted like a great lord going to his land. In the large town of Chatillon, all the inhabitants were at the town gates and followed us as far as the castle gates; and lastly, you will know that I am making a lot of noise in the country, which annoys me greatly because I am watched and observed in a tiresome way (...). The bride describes her in-laws before passing judgment: "All in all, my husband is the best thing in the family (...). !
