Large and rare carved lapis-lazuli bas-relief decorated with - Lot 6
Large and rare carved lapis-lazuli bas-relief decorated with the Muses of Poetry and Music; based on a marble bas-relief by Jean Rousselet (Paris 1656 - 1693), late 17th century. H_20.5 cm L_14.8 cm. In a gilded wood frame. This work was directly inspired by the reception piece for the Académie by sculptor Jean Rousselet in 1686. The marble bas-relief was entitled "Poetry and Music celebrating the glory of Louis XIV." It is now in the Musée du Louvre (inv MR 2764). The composition was probably too large for the dimensions of the lapis plaque, and the king's portrait was replaced by a vase on a column. Lapis lazuli is such a rare and expensive material that bas-reliefs were created with economy of material, using thin slices of stone on a harder material such as slate. Lapidary skills are applied in two different ways. While the faces are finely polished, the clothes are rougher, playing with the reflections of light. The size and remarkable craftsmanship of this plaque make it a highly prized object. Expert : Benoît Bertrand
