Louis Simon PAINSUN Regency chest of drawers. - Lot 41
Louis Simon PAINSUN Regency chest of drawers. Regency-style chest of drawers in veneered wood with frieze decoration. It opens on three rows, underlined by dark brass fluting, with four drawers, two of which are in the first row. The lower drawer forms a central bridge. Gilded bronze trim: Sphinx lock escutcheons, drop handles on large rosettes, apron, gadrooned brackets, female-headed falls and foliate sabots. Royal red marble top with corbin. Stamped LSP. (On the base of the uprights) Louis Simon PAINSUN. Master before 1730. Paris. Regency period. H_ 85,5 cm W_130 cm D_65,5 cm Restoration. Marble restored. This craftsman, son of François Painsun, was married to Marguerite Doirat, daughter of cabinetmaker Etienne Doirat. He resided on rue Saint-Nicolas in 1727 and obtained his master's degree before 1730. His career is virtually unknown. From 1700, he was in contact with Bernard Van Risen Burgh Sr. He worked in particular for his colleague Migeon, whose stamp appears on some furniture next to his initials "LSP", and for Mathieu Criaerd. He mainly produces chests of drawers. According to Jean-Dominique Augarde, author of a study on Doirat, some of his stamped furniture bears the initials L.S.P. of cabinetmaker Louis Simon Painsun, his son-in-law. Painsun appears to have run a furniture boutique on rue Saint-Honoré that Doirat had rented. Here, he sold his own products alongside those of his father-in-law. This explains the presence of the two stamps. The exact date of this cabinetmaker's death is not known, but he died in 1748 at the latest. The Musée Carnavalet has in its collection a very fine "commode en tombeau" in violet wood (fig.1) dating from the 1730s, whose structure and forms are similar to the one presented here.
