SOMBREUIL (Marie-Murille de). 1768–1823. - Lot 149
SOMBREUIL (Marie-Murille de). 1768–1823. Daughter of the governor of the Invalides, who defended her father during the September Massacres of 1792 by drinking a glass of blood offered to her by a sans-culotte. Letter to a friend. Paris, November 11, 1788. 2 pp., double-leaf in-12. A moving letter in which she expresses her fondness for the city of Lille and its inhabitants. “(…) So you are going to visit your husband’s family; no doubt you will be cherished there, for with your character, you are destined to be loved and esteemed by all who come to know you and with whom you will live on a regular basis. Many people lose out by being known, but you, my dear Montoban, can only gain from it (…). Monsieur is dining with us today; if he allows me the time to speak, just imagine how I will talk about the fine city of Lille and its inhabitants. (…). A few weeks ago, someone from Lille told me that a rumor had been spread that you were pregnant; if that were true, I offer you my congratulations; for I believe you would be quite pleased to bear the noble title of mother; and no one is better suited than you to fulfill those duties (…). ENCLOSED is a death certificate for an officer quartered at Les Invalides, signed by François-Charles, Marquis de SOMBREUIL (1723–1794), Governor of Les Invalides, dated June 24, 1792 (1 folio page, partially printed, with the letterhead of the Hôtel royal des Invalides; tear). Suspected of having defended the Tuileries in August 1792, Sombreuil was imprisoned at the Abbaye and then at Sainte-Pélagie before being guillotined in June 1794. Former Loliée Collection.
